Revisiting a Historical Truth: Was There Really Such a Sharp Distinction Between Men’s and Women’s Attire in the Safavid Era?
Our contemporary perception of a rigid separation between men’s and women’s clothing does not necessarily align with historical reality. At the dawn of the Safavid era, the general form of Iranian attire—for both men and women—shared striking structural similarities! Long robes, fitted bodices, loose-fitting trousers, exquisite fabrics, and distinctive headgear were common elements in the sartorial patterns of that period. In fact, an individual’s gender was not defined by a fundamental shift in the overall form of their garments; rather, it was the subtlety of the cut, the specific details, the nature of the ornamentation, and the manner of wearing the clothes that created the distinctions.
